During the ‘Semana Santa’ or the Holy Week in Seville (from 13 to 20 April), nearly sixty confraternities represent and commemorate the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Christ, taking to the streets, in procession from their churches to the Cathedral, in the so-called ‘Official Race’.
The old town of Seville, the largest in Spain, is decorated like at no other time of the year in a cherished and eagerly anticipated sensory celebration for both locals and visitors alike. With more than four centuries of tradition, the ‘Semana Santa’ in Seville -declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest– represents a spiritual, cultural, artistic and gastronomic journey that is hard to explain in words, but essential to understand the city of Seville.
The colorful San Francisco Square -where Mercer Plaza Sevilla is located- constitutes the central area of the Official Race since all the confraternities pass in front of the hotel. Due to its strategic location in the heart of San Francisco Square and facing the City Hall, the hotel offers a truly unique standpoint in the city to live the ‘Semana Santa’.
